I James Wright of Botetourt County in Virginia being convinced in my own judgment that it is contrary to the principles of Christianity to hold our Fellow Creatures in bondage or Slavery, do hereby manumit & set absolutely free, a negro man named Sam from & after the first day of October, which will be in the year one thousand seven hundred & ninety five, so that he be deemed adjudged & taken for a free person, that is to say, he the said Samuel from the date before named to be at his own disposal & at liberty to act for himself without my hindrance of molestation from me, my heirs, assigns, or any person or persons claiming or to claim from, by, or under me forever. Also a negro woman named Charlotte from this day and a negro boy named Ben, a girl named Milly, & one other named Jane, when they usually come of lawful age and I do hereby renounce all right, title, & claim to the said Negroes except as before excepted both for myself my heirs & assigns forever, accordingly hereby certify my desire that the above manumission be recorded in the court agreeable to law, in confirmation of which I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 13 day of September one thousand seven hundred thirty one.
