Text of Freedom Document
This Indenture made this the 16th day of August 1851 by and between Landon C Garland by Edward R Chambers his attorney in fact of the first part, and Elizabeth, a slave, and her six children to wit, John aged about fifteen years, Lucy aged about thirteen years, Elizabeth Jr aged about twelve years, Richard aged about ten years, Hanah about eight years, and Julia about three years of the second part all of whom are the slaves of the said Landon C Garland. Witnesseth: That the said Landon C Garland for divers good and valuable considerations and especially for the consideration of seven hundred and eighty five dollars & sixty two cents paid to him by College John who is the husband of the said Elizabeth and the father of her children. Hath granted bargained given release and confirmed unto the said Elizabeth, John, Lucy, Elizabeth Jr, Richard, Hanah, and Julia their freedom from slavery and bondage and by these presents the said Landon C Garland do release and discharge the said Elizabeth and her said children from all obligations of labor and servitude to him the said Landon C Garland and do hereby declare them invested with all the rights and privileges which by the laws of Virgina are enjoyed by Free Negroes. But should the said Elizabeth and her children or any of them forfeit their freedom by remaining in the state of Virgina contrary to law then this indenture is to be void as to those who may have forfeited this freedom and they are again to become the slaves of the said Landon C Garland. In Testimony of all and singular the premises the said Landon C Garland by Edward R Chambers his attorney in fact has hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and date above written.

Mecklenburg County Clerk’s Office 30th of September 1851.
The foregoing Deed of Emancipation from Landon C Garland by Edward R Chambers his attorney in fact to Elizabeth and her children was this day received in the Clerk’s Office aforesaid, and acknowledged by the aforesaid Edward R Chambers to be his act and Deed and admitted to record.
