Text of Freedom Document
I Abraham Sallie do make and constitute this to be my last will and testament hereby cancelling and revoking all other wills. First I wish all my just debts to be paid. Secondly, I give to Elizabeth Sallie and Isaac B Sallie all my stock of horses, cattle, sheep, and hogs to them and their heirs forever. Thirdly, all the rest and residue of my perishable estate and all my Lands and real estate I wish sold by my Executor hereafter named on such terms and credits as he may think best. Fourthly, it is my will and desire that all my slaves to wit, Green, Phill, Erasmus and Caroline and her two children with the future increase of Caroline be emancipated and set free and I give to them the said slaves their freedom forever and request that my Executor will take all necessary steps to secure their freedom to them. And if the laws of the state will not permit them after the emancipation to remain in the state I wish my Executor to have them moved to some free state or territory and to settle them there and for that purpose I give to the said slaves all the money arising from the sale of the perishable estate and real estate above directed to be made by my Executor to be appropriated by him in defraying the expenses of their removal and settlement, and if the proceeds of said sale should not be sufficient for that purpose, then I wish the said slaves hired out by my Executor until their hires shall rain [sic] in sum sufficient to remove and settle them, and for their support one year in their new home, and if any or either of the said slaves should prefer to remain in Virginia as slaves to removing to a free state and should so elect the election to be made before the Justices of the County Court of Mecklenburg in open Court the woman Caroline to elect for her children that may be under ten years of age. Then I wish my Executor to sell those who choose to remain in Virginia and I give the proceed of the sale to the others to be applied by my Executor as before directed. But should the laws permit them to remain in this state at the time of their emancipation then I give to them all the money before directed to be appropriated to their removal and settlement to a free state viz. to Green, Erasmus, Phil, and Caroline, each one fourth to them and their heirs forever. Lastly, I nominate and appoint Edward R Chambers Executor to this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have set my hand and seal this the 12th day of November 1849- acknowledged before us.
