Text of Freedom Document
In the name of God amen. I Joseph Brand of Albemarle County state of Virginia considering the uncertainty of life and being of sound mind do make this my last will and testament.
Ist it is my will that all my just debts be paid.
Secondly, I give entire freedom to my house servant Caroline and to the children of said Caroline, namely Elizabeth, Adeline, Mildred Anne, Ferdinand and James Andrew they being the only surviving children. Thirdly after my just debts are paid I will that all my property both real and personable appropriated to the use and benefit of the said Caroline and her children namely Elizabeth, Adeline, Mildred Anne and James Andrew and the other child namely Ferdinand should be entitled to so much of the above named property as will give him a support until he be arrived at an age suitable to be put to some trade.
With respect to the personal property it is my will that neither Ned nor Watt be sold to defray any expense and also I wish any one of the negroes to be sold except for the purpose of defraying their necessary expenses.
Should there by any money arising from the sale of the said property more than a sufficiency to defray the expenses of their removal to another state. My will that such money be paid out in land for the benefit of the said Caroline and her children namely Elizabeth, Adeline, Mildred Anne, and James Andrew.
I relinquish my claim to Childs Brand’s interest in my mother Fanny Brand’s estate wishing that the said interest be appropriated to the benefit of the said Childs Brand children and 1 also relinquish all other claims l heretofore have against the said Childs Brand.
Do hereby appoint my friends Findee C. Thurmon and Richard Wingfield my sole executors to this my last will and testament in witness thereof. I set my hand and seal this sixth day of June one thousand eight hundred and twenty six.
