Text of Freedom Document

In the name of God Amen I William Ward of the County of Charlotte being weak in body but of sound mind and memory, do dispose of the Estate which it hath pleased God to bless me with in the following manner, viz. after my just debts are fully paid and satisfied, then all the rest of my Estate both real and personal (except two Negro men named Mingo and Stepney) I give to my beloved wife Anne Ward during her natural life, and at her death I desire that all the negros given to my wife of every age and description whatsoever may be fully free, and discharged from serving any other person or persons whatsoever. I give my stock of every kind, household and kitchen furniture as well as all the rest of my personal estate to my beloved wife Anne to her and her heirs forever. It is my desire that after the death of my beloved wife Anne that all my lands may go to James Huntsman son of Adam Huntsman to him and his heirs forever. I desire that my two negros Ming and Stepney may be free after my death. I desire that James Huntsman should be educated two years at the expense of my estate and lastly I do appoint my beloved wife Anne Executrices and John Spencer and Robert Bedford executors of this my last will, declaring this only to be my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereto put my hand and affixed my seal this 12th day of November 1796.
