To all whom it may concern, know ye, that James Wimbish of Charlotte County, for divers causes one thereunto moving, and particular by, in consideration of his faithful services as a soldier in the late American War, do fully and voluntarily emancipate & set free my negroe [sic] man slave, Toby, alias William Ferguson agreeable to an act of Assembly in that case made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand affixed my seal this third day of May, in the 10th American Independence & year of our Lord Christ 1785.

At Court held for Charlotte County the 3rd of day of July 1786.
This written instrument emancipating Toby, alias William Ferguson, negro man slave belonging to James Wimbish of said County was acknowledged by the said James Wimbish in court to be his act and deed and on his motion is admitted to record.
