Whereas Elizabeth Patteson decd. [deceased] by her last will and testament, dated the 1st day October 1841
and recorded in Albemarle County Court the 6th day of July 1857, did set free and liberate her negro woman
Lucy and Frances & Eliza, children of said Lucy. And whereas the said Frances & Eliza children of said
Lucy as aforesaid have since departed this life leaving surviving them their mother Lucy. Now therefore I,
D.J. Hartsook administrator with the will annexed of said Elizabeth Patteson decd. in pursuance of the wishes
of the Testatrix expressed in said will, do hereby Manumit, emancipate and set free the said negro woman
slave named Lucy and sometimes called Lucy Patteson and I hereby declare her the said Lucy to be entirely
liberated from slavery & entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in my power
as administrator aforesaid to vest her. She the said Lucy hereby emancipated is a woman of Black
complexion, about five feet four & 1/2 inches high, and will be forty nine years old on the [blank] day of Sept
next.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal as administrator aforesaid, this 25th day
of May 1858.

Albemarle County to wit.
I W. A. Turner, a Justice of the peace in & for said County do hereby certify that D. J. Hartsook party the
foregoing deed bearing date on the 25th day of May 1858 this day acknowledged the same before me in my
County aforesaid.
Given under my hand this 25th day of May 1858.

In the Clerks Office of Albemarle County Court 7th June 1858
This deed of Emancipation was presented to me in said office and being duly Certified was thereupon
admitted to record.
