Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I Martha L Crank of the County of Albemarle and State of Virginia do hereby manumit and set free forever the following slaves viz. David Watson and his wife Lavinia and their children, Thomas, Martha and Julia, and any increase since 1854 or that may be hereafter. David Watson is about 37 years old a brown colour and over the usual height, his wife is about the same age and colour. Thomas is a bright mulatto about thirteen years old. Martha is a brown colour ten years old, Julia about the same colour as Martha & seven years old. These slaves were sent by me to the State of Ohio in the fall of 1854 without free papers and this is intended to supply that omission.
Witness my hand and seal this 29th day of Sept. 1859.
