Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I Martha L Crank of the County of Albemarle and State of Virginia do hereby manumit and set free forever the following slaves viz. James & his wife Patty & their children, George Watson, David Watson, Norbonin Watson Manuel and Ellick. James is about 70 years old, his wife about 65 both black. George Watson is about thirty nine years old. Norbonin Watson is about thirty two years both of a brown colour (David Watson has been described in a deed to himself & family and is only mentioned here as one of this family). Manuel is about nineteen and Ellick about seventeen year old, both black.

These slaves were sent off by me to the State of Ohio in the fall of 1854 without free papers and this is intended to supply that omission. Witness my hand and seal this 29th day of September 1859.
