Whereas on the 22nd of March 1852, the undersigned as one of the Executors of Opie Norris dec’d executed an obligation to James Monroe, a free man of color, reciting that said Monroe has paid him four hundred and thirty dollars in part for the purchase of his wife Evelina and her youngest child Mary Ann bonding the undersigned to give to said Evelina & Mary Ann and any child or children the former might thereafter have, upon the said Monroe’s paying the additional sum of two hundred & twenty dollars with interest from the 22nd March 1837. And whereas he has since paid to me the said sum of $220 with interest as aforesaid, and said Evelina has had born to her another child named Thomas Jefferson. Now therefore know all men by these presents that I James Norris one of the Executors of Opie Norris dec’d do hereby emancipate & set free the said Evelina & her children Mary Ann & Thomas Jefferson in as full and complete manner as I may do so by the laws of Virginia and I further declare in pursuance of the original agreement that I make the deed upon my own responsibility and assume to myself all [illegible] of any objection might hereafter be made by any of the legacies of my father except Egbert R Watson who for himself waves the right to make any objection but as to the other parties is to be under my responsibility. Given under my hand & seal this 7th day of July 1852.

This deed was presented to me in said office and being acknowledged by James Norris a party thereto was ordered to record.
