Whereas a certain Charles Wingfield late of Albemarle County and State of Virginia heretofore on the 24th day of December eighteen hundred and seventten made his last will and testament which was duly proved and admitted to record in the Clerk’s office of Albemarle County Court on the sixth day of December eighteen hundred and nineteen directing that a certain slave named Eliza should be emancipated in the following clause of said Charles Wingfield’s will “Then it is my will and desire that Eliza daughter of Ducky should be emancipated agreeably to my wife’s desire, the time when she will be entitled to her freedom may be ascertained by the letter sent with Eliza to Howell Lewis which will be when she is nineteen years of age about eleven years after the death of her mistress”. And wheras the said slave Eliza has been in the possession of Howell Lewis ever since the death of Charles Wingfield and during this time she the said Eliza has had as issue two children one named Susan about eighteen years old and another named Henry about sixteen years old, and the said Susan has an infant named Frances Ella. Now therefore their indenture made this fourteenth day of June Eighteen hundred and forty five between Francis Wingfield Executor of the last will and testament of said Charles Wingfield decd and Howell Lewis in the one part and the said Eliza and her children, Susan and Henry, and Frances Ella daughter of said Susan of the other part all of Albemarle County. Witnesseth that the said Francis Mayfield executor as aforesaid and the said Howell Lewis for and in consideration of the fidelity and services of the said Eliza and her children while in servitude at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents have manumitted and set free and released the said slaves Eliza, Susan, Henry and M Frances Ella from all obligations of slavery, hereby disposing the bonds existing between master and slave and making the said Eliza, Susah, Henry, and Frances Ella entirely free in as full and ample manner as is allowed by the laws of Virginia: and the freedom of the said Eliza, Susan, Henry and Frances Ella and an entire discharge from all duty and obligation as slaves unto the said Francis Wingfield executor as aforesaid and the said Howell Lewis, they the said Francis Wingfield executor and the said Howell Lewis for themselves their heirs executors and admin unto the said Eliza, Susan, Henry, & Frances Ella do covenant to wrrant and forever defend against the claims of all persons whatever. In testimony whereof the said Francis Wingfield executor of Charles Winfield dec’d and Howell Lewis have hereunto set their hands & seals this fourteenth day of June eighteen hundred and forty five aforementioned.

In the Clerk’s office of Albemarle County Court this 16th day of June 1845
This deed was presented to me in said office and being proved by GW Trueheart as to Wingfield & Lewis was confirmed. And in the same office on the 26th day of June 1845 This deed was proveb before me as to Lewis by D Carr and continued.
And on the 4th day of July 1845 this deed was presented to me in my said office and acknowledged by Wingfield.

At a Court held for Albemarle County this 4th day of August 1845
On motion it is ordered that the deed of Emancipation setting free Eliza, Susan, Henry and an infant Frances Ella be admitted to record and that a copy of said deed be delivered to each one of the above named slaves.
