Wheras [Whereas] Martha F. Walker decd. [deceased] of the County of Albemarle and State of Virginia by
her last will and testimony of record in the Clerks office of Albemarle County Court did manumit and set free
certain mail [male] Slaves, and authorized Richard Duke her Executor to purchais [purchase] Fanny and her
son George the wife and child of Reubin commonly called Reubin Lee. Now this Indenture made and entered
into this 9th day of October 1843 Between Richard Duke of the County of Albemarle of the one part and
Fanny and her son George Slaves of the said County of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Richard Duke
for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars to him in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivering
of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged he the said Richard Duke hath manumitted and
set free and released the said Slaves Fanny and George from all obligations of Slavery, hereby dissolving for
ever the bonds existing between Master Slave, and making the said Fanny and George a free woman and a free
boy in as full and ample manner as is allowed by the laws of Virginia, and the freedom of the said Fanny and
George are intirely [entirely] discharged from all duty and obligation as Slaves unto him the said Richard
Duke. He the said Richard Duke for himself, his heirs executors and administrators unto the said Fanny and
George doth covenant to warrant and for ever defend for ever against the claims of all persons.

and affixed his seal the day and year
