<text>I John Parker of King George County Virginia, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time made.
1. I will and direct that the whole of my slaves and their future increase (except those held by me for the life of Mrs. A. Braxton) be emancipated and forever set free on the first day of April eighteen hundred and sixty two, at which time my executors hereinafter named are required to execute to them deeds of emancipation and to pay and deliver to each out of the assets of my estate, twenty five dollars in money, a suit of good clothes including hat and shoes and a pair of blankets. But this bequest of freedom is made to each of my slaves upon the following express conditions to wit: that he shall conduct himself during the continuance of his servitude orderly and properly, and if either one of them shall behave in such manner as in the opinion of my wife an executors (they concurring) merits such treatment, he shall be sold by my executors and the money arising from such sale is to constitute a part of my estate, and be disposed of as I shall herein after direct in regard to other money and property of which I may die possessed.
2. When the period for the emancipation of my slaves arrives, should either one or more of them prefer a state of slavery to freedom, he may select a master or mistress to whom my executors are directed to convey him, upon such terms and conditions without regard to price, as to them may seem best for the interest of such slave. And should any one or more of my slaves from age or infirmity be incapable of taking care of himself, I will and direct that such slave be not emancipated, but be provided for out of the assets of my estate in such manner as to my executors may seem most judicious.
3. During the life of my wife I give and bequeath to my sister Sarah Hodges an annuity of one hundred dollars to be paid out of the interest or profits of my estate, and should my said sister die before my wife, I will and direct that the said sum of one hundred dollars be paid annually during the life of my wife in equal parts to the children of my said sister.
4. I give and devise to my wife Nancy Parker, one third of the residue of my estate absolutely to be disposed of by her as she pleases. I also give to my wife during her life the use and profits of the remaining two thirds of my estate.
5. Upon the death of my wife, I will and devise the two thirds of my estate given her during her life as follows, to wit: One third of the amount I give to my sister Sarah Hodges, and should she be then dead to be equally divided among her children. One other third part of said amount I give equally to the children of my deceased brother W.R. Parker. And the remaining third part of said amount I give and bequeath to be equally divided among the children of my deceased sister Nancy Goldman.
6. If my wife shall desire to be released from the trouble of managing and conducting a farm, it shall be the duty of my executors when she shall request them so to do, either before or after the period at which my slaves are directed to be emancipated to sell my real and personal estate (the slaves directed to be emancipated excepted) and one third of the money arising therefrom shall be paid to my wife as her absolute property to do with as she pleases; and the remaining two thirds shall be put at interest on good security, and the interest accruing therefrom annually paid to my wife during her life. And upon the death of my wife, the said principal sum shall be paid to the persons, and in the proportions named and designated in the preceding 5th clause of this my will.
Should my wife desire a sale of my estate before the period at which my slaves are directed to be emancipated, they are to be hired out until then and the hires paid over to her.
In selling my interest in the slaves held for the life of Mrs. Braxton, I wish a preference given to Mr. John Washington (who is ultimately entitled to them) provided he will pay a reasonable price for it.
In order that my wife may not expose herself to the chances of [illegible] in her declining age, I earnestly request her in the event of her again marrying to have the property I have given her secured by contract for her own use.
7. I constitute and appoint my friends James Arnold and Wiley Roy Mason executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof to this my will written on two sheets of paper, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this third day of August 1856.
Signed, sealed, published John Parker (seal)

In King George County Court Sept 4th 1856
The foregoing last will and testament of John Parker deceased was this day produced in court, proved by the oaths of William E. Stuart and Samuel W. Griffin, the two subscribing witnesses thereto and admitted to record. And on the motion of James Arnold one of the executors named in the said will who made oath thereto, and together with Wiley R. Mason, his security entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $25000 conditioned according to law, certificate was granted him for obtaining a probate of said will in due form.

1. I direct that all debts justly due by me at the period of my death be paid.
2. In consideration of the fidelity, affection and faithful services of my servant maid Caroline, I do hereby manumit and set free from slavery said negro woman Caroline and her child called James William Park. As I know said slaves when liberated cannot remain in Virginia, I request my executor hereinafter named to see that they are carried out of the State of Virginia, liberate and settled in such place either in the United States or elsewhere as Caroline may select.
3. I give and bequeath to my servant maid Caroline the clear annual sum of one hundred dollars to be paid to her by my executor annually during her life. The first payment thereof to begin and be made at the expiration of one year from my death. Out of this annuity Caroline is to provide for her son James William Park, until he is old enough to learn a trade. Should Caroline die before her son James William Park attains the age of twenty one years, then and in that event, I give and bequeath to said William Park the clear annual sum of fifty dollars to be paid to him by my executor annually until he arrives at the age of twenty one years. The first payment thereof to begin and be made at the expiration of one year after his mother’s death.
4. With the exception of a sum sufficient to enclose the burying ground at Browfield in Westmoreland County as hereinafter directed, I give and devise to my cousin Julia Calvert Stuart, daughter of my cousin Richard K. Stuart of Cedar Grove, King George County, all the rest and residue of my estate real, personal and mixed to her and her heirs forever.
5. It is my will to be buried at Woodfield in Westmoreland by the side of my dear mother, and as already suggested, I desire my executors out of any funds belonging to my estate, to have the burying ground as that place enclosed with a substantial brick wall.

I Lewis Cross of the County of King George and State of Virginia being of sound mind and memory, for which I thank God, and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with. I give and bequeath in the same manner following. That is to say & first I commit my soul into the hands of my Creator who gave it and my body to the Earth.
2nd I desire that all my negroes to wit: Thornton, Gusty, Kitty, Mariah, Hannah, William, Henry, Mary, Tulip, Barbary, Alfred, Anne, James, Cornelius, Sidney & Adison with the future increase of the females be emancipated or set free at my death and that my exors hereinafter named hire out such of them as may be in a state to be hired for two years & that the amount accruing therefrom be appropriated to their benefit in the way hereinafter mentioned. If the hires in the two years amount not to the sum of five hundred dollars, the balance to be raised out of the sale of some part of my other property. Should the said negroes consent to be sent to Liberia or any other Colony in Africa, I desire that my exors or either of them see them safely delivered on board of the vessel provided for their transportation. Or if they, the said negroes, prefer being located in any one of the free States in this county, that either or both of my exors go with them and purchase for them a quantity of land sufficient to give them a comfortable & permanent home. After paying the expenses of the said negroes, either of their transportation or locating & selling them in this country, the balance of the five hundred dollars to be divided amongst the said negroes.
3rd I give and bequeath the residue of my property both real and personal to my sister Elizabeth Cross during her natural life, and after her death to my nephew Lewis Cross, the youngest son of my brother James Cross, now residing in London. Should my said nephew die without lawful heir begotten of his body, then the said property herein devised to be equally divided among the children of my nephew James Cross of Warren County.
And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my friends John Baker and Charles C. Baker Executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other and former wills and testaments by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th day of September 1849.

In the first place, I liberate and set free Henry, commonly called Henry Clarke, and Betty Reed both residing at this time in Philadelphia, but still slaves, not having been emancipated, though removed to that city.
Secondly, I liberate also & set free the following named slaves to wit: Jenny Terry and her children, Andrew, Moses, Johnson, Charles, Helen, Lee and Barbara, and my dining room servant Patsey Tibbs and her children Jordy, Kitty, William Rachel, Amanda and Patsy, together with the future increase of Patsey Tibbs, and lastly Harriet, a mulatto girl, sister to Henry Clarke.
Thirdly, My just debts must be paid by my Executors out of any property real or personal, saving & excepting the above named liberated slaves whose freedom is not to be infringed on any account whatever, and excepting also my gold watch & chain which I hereby bequest to Charles the son of Jenny Terry. I except also a small parcel of land which I shall mention hereafter.
Fourthly, I give and bequeath to the above named Henry Clarke, Betty Reed, Andrew, Moses, Johnson, Charles & Helen, children of Jenny Terry, and to Judy & Patsy, daughters of Patsey Tibbs, one thousand dollars each. I give and bequeath likewise to Patsey Tibbs & Jenny Terry two hundred dollars each and to Harriett one hundred dollars. All this money is to be paid to the several parties above named at the time of the removal of them from the state. And to such of them as are already removed immediately upon my death, I direct that the above named liberated slaves shall under no pretext whatever be removed to Liberia or any other place beyond the United States without their consent. My Executor must remove them to Pennsylvania where Henry, betty, Judy & Harriett are now living, or to some other state if they prefer it. He must defray all the expenses of their removal out of my estate and such as attend their comfort and settlement after removal.
Fifthly, I give and devise the residue of my property, real and personal wherever found, with the exception of a small parcel of land which I shall direct to be sold to my nephew Robert O. Carter residing in Mississippi, the son of my late brother Robert C. Carter, to have and to hold to him the said Robert & his heirs forever.
Sixthly, I direct my Executor to sell at public sale the small parcel of land some forty or fifty acres lying between the lands of Wm. Taylor Smith & Augustine Fitzhugh reserved when I last sold a part of [?Canning?] to the former gentleman, and to divide the proceeds of sale equally between the above named Henry, Betty, Judy & her sisters Patsey, Andrew, Moses, Johnson, Charles & Helen in addition to the monies I have ordered to be paid to each.
Lastly, I wish my body to be buried at Canning by the side of my wife in a plain & simple manner, and I appoint as my Executor my highly valued friend William Taylor Smith, whom I earnestly solicit to guard the interests of the slaves whom I have liberated. In witness of all which I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 30th day of March in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fifty.

								22 July 1850

Codicil 2nd July 17 1851- Having now at this date paid the several sums mentioned in codicil first, I revoke said codicil and having advanced to Betty Reed to hundred dollars of her portion, that sum to wit: two hundred dollars to be deducted from her portion of one thousand dollars. <text>William M. Roger’s Will
In the name of God Amen. I William M. Rogers of the County of King George and State of Virginia, afflicted in mind, but thanks to Almighty God in the full and perfect enjoyment of my mental powers, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the manner and form following viz.
I give and bequeath to my friends Solomon J.S. Brown, Samuel Oldham, and Edward Oldham all my earthly goods in trust nevertheless to be by them deposed of in the manner herein after directed.
I will and direct that as soon after my decease as to them shall seem proper, that they sell for cash all my lands, houses, and tenements as also my ferry over Machodoc Creek commonly known by the name of Little Ferry, to the purchaser or purchasers of all which property I hereby authorize and fully empower them to make full and perfect title against the claim or claims of all persons whatsoever, save only such portion of such lands, houses and tenements as I may hereafter otherwise dispose of. I likewise will and direct that my said friends Solomon J.S. Brown, Samuel Oldham, and Edward Oldham in like manner dispose of all my perishable property not hereafter otherwise disposed of.
I will and direct that out of the money obtained from the sale of all my property, my just debts first be paid with the balance I will and direct that said friends S.J.S. Brown, Samuel Oldham and Edward Oldham purchase the following slaves, being a portion of the slaves belonging to Mrs. Sarah Thornton of the estate of Edward Oldham dec’d viz. William Rogers, Betsy Rogers, Cornell Rogers, Peyton Rogers, Jane Rogers, Sudwell Rogers, Thacker W. Rogers or so many of them as the funds of my estate may enable them to purchase obtaining in their hands so much of the said estate as shall be sufficient to enable them to dispose of the said slaves as hereafter directed, but should the said funds be found insufficient to purchase the whole of the said slaves, and my said friends be of opinion that my hiring out such as they may purchase for a term of five years or less, they will be thereby enabled to purchase the remainder. It is my will and desire that they hire them for that purpose.
It is my will and desire that my friends, after they have obtained the above named slaves, dispose of them in the following manner viz. That they bind the boys to humane masters of such trades as they may make choice of until they attain the age of twenty one, and the girls to such mistresses as they may choose until they attain the age of eighteen, as they severally attain the above ages, it is my will and desire that my friends give them safe conduct to such of the non slave holding states as they may select, but should the funds arising from the sale of my estate be too nearly exhausted to defray their expenses to any of the non slave holding states, it is my will and desire that a sufficient fund be raised for that purpose by hiring each one as they become free of their indentures until enough money is obtained to defray his or her expenses. Should there be a surplus of my estate after purchasing the above slaves, it is my will and desire that it be equally divided among the said slaves and that he or her portion be given as they respectfully attain the before mentioned ages.
It is my will and desire that my said friends retain during the life of my negro woman Tizzy the following property for her use and benefit viz: all my household and kitchen furniture, my house where I now live together with the land in the field around the house, firewood and timber from the most convenient part of the land, one choice cow & calf, one choice breeding sow and fattening hots, and three barrels of Indian corn out of my estate annually. Upon the death of the said negro woman Tizzy it is my will and desire that my said friends or their representatives in like manner with the first of my property mentioned dispose of the above property and remit to such of the before mentioned slaves as may be heard of within eighteen months after her decease to each an equal moiety of the proceeds of the sale making the division among such only as may be heard from in the above named space of time.
Lastly, I constitute and appoint Solomon J.S. Brown, Sam’l Oldham, and Edward Oldham executors of this my last will and testament hoping they will qualify and thereby become instrumental in a charitable deed.
In testimony of the validity of this my will, I have hereunto fixed my hand and seal this the sixteenth day of October one thousand eight hundred and twenty four.

              <text>Meriweather Taliaferro’s will
I Meriweather Taliaferro of the County of King George being in perfect health but knowing the uncertainty of life do make this my last will and testament in the manner following.
Imprimis. It is my will and desire that my servant woman Sally and her children and their increase, if any, have their freedom at my death should I not have it in my power to emancipate them previous to that event.
Item I give and bequeath to the said Sally and her children two thousand dollars (to be paid out of any part of my estate), two mules or horses, a yoke of oxen, a milk cow, two beds, and furniture including all my blankets, all the meat on hand at my death and twenty barrels of corn. And it is my will and desire that my executors (herein named) do have the emancipation of the said Sally and her children and their increase (if any) permanently established and for the perfect accomplishment of which, they if necessary are to consider any part or the whole of my estate subject. The existence of a cruel law of this state may render it necessary to seek for those unfortunates some more friendly quarter and hence the latitude to my executors.
Item I give and bequeath to Benjamin Franklin (a son of the said Sally) who I have already emancipated five hundred dollars to be paid out of my estate his choice of any one of my negroes and one mule or horse. It is to be understood that he is to have no part of what is above devised to his mother and her other children.
Item the residue of my estate (after the foregoing part of this my will is strictly complied with) I give and bequeath to Nappertandy, now a child living with my overseer, and whom I recognize as my child by Ann Truslow.
It is my will and desire that my friend Mrs. Sally Rogers (the wife of my overseer) do accept of fifty dollars as a very small testimonial of my gratitude for the care she has taken of this child.
I appoint as executors to this my last will and testament my friend Cary Seldon of Salvington Stafford County, Alexander S. Hove, John Seymour Taliaferro, and my brother John Taliaferro of King George, and enjoin upon them in the name of the friendship I hear them to have justice done the poor woman & her children herein named, they will be forlorn and helpless when I am no more and will require the protecting hand of friendship to be extended to them. I have the consoling reflection that the selection I have here made will be as a shield to them against the injustice of this world.
Item It is my will and desire that my faithful old man servant Ben have his freedom at my death and fifty dollars. Witness my hand and seal this first day of December one thousand eight hundred and eighteen.
