              <text>Know all men by these presents that I John McRoberts of Carroll County and State of Virginia for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and do bear to my daughter, Polly McRoberts, of the county &amp; state aforesaid, as well as for the further consideration of one dollar to me in hand paid by the said Polly McRoberts, at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have given and granted &amp; by these presents do give &amp; grant unto the said Polly McRoberts her freedom from this day forward to superintend her own business to work and trade for herself.&#13;

              <text>In the name of God Amen. I Peter Stephens of the County of Carroll and State of Virginia do ordain this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills whatsoever. I give and bequeath to John Early my negro woman Edalina and her children and Susan and her children to take care of as it is my wish that they shall have their freedom. I also give and bequeath my boy David also to John Early. I give and bequeath to my brother James Stephens my boy George and [?Mon?]. I give my boy Rubin to my brother Joseph Stephens’ widow. I give and bequeath my Pierce Sam to John Early. I give and bequeath all my land in the County of Carroll to John Early by he paying to Margaret Seaton twelve hundred dollars at two installments, one half in eighteen months and the other half in three years. I wish all of my personal property to be sold and my debts paid and if there should not be a sufficiency to pay, then I wish some of my land sold that is in Wythe County and the balance I will and bequeath to my brother Joseph Stephens’ widow, all claims existing between John Early are to be considered settled. I wish my hands to remain as they are until fall and then I desire a sale of all my personal property. I desire John Early to control my hands and attend to the making of the crop. I wish my brother James and John Early to act as my executors, whereof I have set my hand and seal.&#13;

This writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Peter Stephens dec’d bearing date on the 20th day of May 1849 was produced in court by John Early and James Stephens, the Executors named in the said writing, in order to be proved and Samuel Coffee and Rebecca his wife and William Dobbins and Elizabeth his wife, which said Rebecca Coffee &amp; Elizabeth Dobbins are sisters and heirs at law of the said Peter Stephens dec’d appeared and opposed the proof of the said will: whereupon divers witnesses were sworn and examined, and the parties aforesaid fully heard by their counsel: on consideration whereof it was the opinion of the court that the said Peter Stephens deceased at the time of executing the writing aforesaid dated the 20th day of May 1849 was of sound and disposing mind and memory and that he was under no undue influence. And Daniel B. Sanders, Andrew J. Hardy and Henry Hardy, the subscribing witnesses to the said writing having testified in court that the said Peter Stephens signed and published the same in their presence, as and for his last will and testament that they subscribed their names as witnesses thereto in the presence of the said Testator and at his request and that the said Testator was of sound mind and memory as far as they know or believe; it was ordered that the said writing of the 20th day of May 1849 be recorded as the last will and testament of the said Peter Stephens deceased. And on the motion of John Early and James Stephens the Executors in the said will named, who made oath thereto and together with John Jackson, Fielden L.. Hale, James Early and William Sayes their securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of $12,000 conditioned as the law directs, certificate was granted them for obtaining a probate of the said will in due form.&#13;

              <text>Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Lundy P. of the County of Carroll &amp; State of Virginia, do hereby give and grant, unto my son Azariah Lundy Jr. his full freedom from this time, until he arrives to the age of twenty one years; he being now fourteen years of age. To trade contract and fully act &amp; do business in his own name for himself and to hold &amp; own property &amp; to be liable for his own contracts as fully as if he was now twenty one years old and fully free from my control.               <text>I John Carroll of the County of Carroll and State of Virginia do hereby make and ordain this as my last will and testament, being of sound mind and disposing memory as follows. First it is my will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid. Second. It is my will that all my property both real and personal, except my slaves be sold by my Executor herein after appointed. The real property for one fourth of the purchase money in cash and the balance in one two and three years equal payments the purchaser giving bond and good security and a lien retained on the bond for the security of the deferred payments. My personal property to be sold on a credit of twelve months for all sums over five dollars the purchaser giving bond and good security. All sums under give dollars cash in hand.&#13;
I further will that my Executor hereinafter named shall hire out my slaves to some careful person or persons who will use them well until such time as he shall have collected the money arising to my estate and then it is my will that my said slaves shall be free as well such as are living at the time of my death as those that may be born afterwards. &#13;
I further will that should my said slaves prefer going to a non slave holding state that my Executors appoint some faithful agent if he cannot perform the duty himself to buy lands for them in such state as will be of the value of all the money in the hands of my Executors except such sums as will be necessary to defray the expenses of their removal and buy such personal property as will be sufficient to enable them to work the lands so bought. &#13;
I further will that they shall have the benefit of and I hereby will to them equally to be divided amongst them all my money arising from the sale of my property as before directed and from collection of debts due me or arising from the hire of said slaves to be expended as herein before directed.&#13;
I further will that if there be any doubt about my said slaves being entitled to their freedom at the end of such time as my Executor shall settle up and make collection as herein before directed, then that they be free at my death and be removed from the state as by how they may be required, as I have before directed. I hereby nominate and appoint my friend Hon. Andrew S. Fulton of the County of Wythe and State aforesaid as Executor of this my last will and testament. Witness my hand and seal this the 7th day of March 1860.&#13;

A paper purporting to be the last will and testament of John Carroll deceased was produced in court and proved by the oaths of William P. Haller &amp; John A. Carter the subscribing witnesses thereto &amp; ordered to be recorded &amp; Andrew S. Fulton who was nominated executor of said will having by a writing sworn his hand which is ordered to be filed &amp; received with the will, renounced the Executorship thereof. The court proceeded to appoint an administrator with the will annexed &amp; on motion of John Early who  made oath according to law &amp; together with James Early, James B Johnson &amp; Michael Kinser his securities entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of thirty thousand dollars with condition according to law. Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of said will as administrator with the said will annexed in due form of law. &#13;
