              <text>Whereas my deceased husband John Noe, by his last will and testament, made the 2ndday of December 1813, bequeathed to me during my natural life her negro man Phill to my sole use and behoof for the term aforesaid, and requested that after my decease the said slave Phill should be emancipated or freed, or be at liberty to do for himselfso far as he could be permitted under the laws of Virginia regulating the emancipation of slaves: and whereas, from a consideration of the long and faithful services of the said slave Phill, both to my deceased husband and to myself, I am disposed and desirous to further and promote the benevolent interests of my said deceased husband regarding the said salve. Be it further known, that I Elizabeth Noe of Lee County &amp; State of Virginia do by these presents from and after the first day of April next and for the consideration aforesaid moving me, emancipate and set free the said negro slave Phill, in pursuance to the wishes of my said deceased husband, and do hereby declare the said Phill to be a free man of color from and after the said first day of April next, and to enjoy and possess all the privileges of a free man of color so far as he will be entitled under the laws of the Commonwealth.               <text>Know all men by these present that I Hawkins Landrum of Halifax County for divers good causes me thereunto moving and agreeable to an act of assembly in that case made, and provided for manumission of slaves, do by these present Emancipate and set free the following negroe slaves (To wit) Phill a negro man aged a little upwards of twenty years to go free next Christmas from me Gowing a Negro Lad about fourteen years of age to free from me at the age of Twenty one years and I do by these present give up all my rights and title claim and demand to the said slaves bip on mentioned and it my desire that they enjoy all the immunities and liberties they as free men are entitled to by the laws of this country. Given under my hand and seal this 26th day of January 1789.&#13;

At a court held for Halifax County the 26t day of January 1789. The within written Emancipation from Hawkins Landrum to Phill and Gowing was acknowledged by the said Hawkins party thereto to be Enacted(?) and was ordered to be recorded.&#13;
