              <text>This indenture made this twenty seventh day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen between Charles Woodson of the County of Prince Edward and State of Virginia, of one part, and Betty, a negro woman, late the slave of Frederick Woodson deceased, of the County of Powhatan, and said state, of the other part; witnesseth that the said Frederick Woodson hath by his last will and testament (which is of record in the County Court of Powhatan) directed the said slave Betty to be emancipated, and that his Executors shall give to the said Betty a deed of emancipation; and the said Charles Woodson, being one of the executors to the said last will and testament, and duly qualified according to law, doth by this indenture fully and freely emancipate the said slave Betty, to all intents and purposes; and doth hereby publish to all whom it may concern, that she is from henceforth enfranchised and placed upon a footing with other free people of color as fully and completely as the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia will permit, and the just claims of creditors will allow.               <text>This indenture made and entered into this twenty seventh day of February in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand eight and eight [sic] between Toney a free negro therewise called Toney Jones of the one part and Betty his wife and slave of the other witnesseth that whereas the said Toney Jones being desirous of emancipating the said Betty his wife for and in consideration of the premises and the love and affection which the said Toney Jones hath and beareth to and for the said Betty his wife as well as for and in consideration of the sum of twenty dollars to him in hand paid by the said Betty at and before the sealing and delivering of these presents their receipt whereof he doth acknowledge given granted bargained and sold rendered and released and by these presents do give grant bargain and sell remise and release unto the said Betty forever all right title interest claim and demand which he the said Toney Jones hath in and to the services labour obedience and control in to and over the said Betty forever and by these presents doth wholly exonerate and discharge the said Betty from all labour service and obedience and by these presents doth published and declare the said Betty to be holy and entirely free and emancipate according to the laws of this bond and entitled by all the rights of freedom under the same.
