Know all men by these presents that I Martha Layne of the County of Bedford and State of Virginia, from motives of benevolence have manumitted and set free from slavery and do hereby manumit and set from slavery my negro man John known the better by the name of John Steptoe aged about 59 years together with his wife Lucy and their five children to wit, A girl by the name of Sally, another give by the name of Ann, a boy by the name of McHenry one by the name of John Pate and the youngest named Hopelast together with an infant the child of the first named girl Sally-And I do hereby give grant and release unto said John and his children above named all my right, title and _____ of in and to their persons labour &amp; services and to the persons, labour, services of their children, and of, in and to all the estate and property which they or either one of them may hereafter acquire or obtain In m____ whereof I have hereunto set my hand &amp; affixed my seal this 6th day of October 1859&#13;

Know all me by these presents, that whereas the last will and testament of Timothy Rogers Decd. Dated the 10th day of March 1848 the said testator emancipated and set free the following negro slaves to wit Bob, Frank, Daniel, Tom, Chie, Samson, Sally, Clarissa, Sarah, Emeline, Amy, William, Mary, Frances, daughter of Mary, Jesse son of Mary, Aberitta, Harvey, Maria, Frances, Nancy, John, Martha, Jesse son of Frances, and Mary (daughter of Frances) which will more fully appear by reference to the said will and testament of the said testator. which after his death to wit on the 22nd day of April 1850 was duly proved in the county court of Bedford and by an order of the said court was recorded, and whereas also the following slaves to wit, Pleasant, Saura, Daniel, Betty and Sophia children of the above named Francis, and the following slaves to wit, Ellen and Phebe children of the above named Mary, are entitled to their freedom under the provisions of the said last will and testament, they having been born since the death of the said testator- Now therefore Know ye, We John F Sale and William Witt, surviving executors of Timothy Rogers deceased have assented and do by these presents assent to the legacy of freedom bequeathed to the said slaves and each and every of them, by the said Timothy Rogers by his last will and testament aforesaid, heretofore they or any or either of them are entitled under and by virtues of the provisions of the last will and testament- in testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals this the 30th day of March 1859&#13;

March 1855 and the codicil is dated the 29th day of September 1855 and were admitted to&#13;
probate at a court held for Bedford County on the 25th day of May 1857 I the said Robert N&#13;
Kelso the sole executor is aforesaid of the said last will and testament of the said John Watson&#13;
deceased as hereby assent to the legacy of freedom bequeath in the said last will and testament to&#13;
the following persons of colour late slaves of the said decedent but in virtue of the said last will&#13;
and testament and these presents are now entitled to their freedom namely Woodson, Pamelia,&#13;
Rhoda, and, Charles, Mary, Mariah, Edy, George, Charlotte, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Sam Wesley,&#13;
and Henry Mitchell a child of Pamelia from since the date of the will. In testimony whereof I&#13;

I John Watson of the county of Bedford in the State of Virginia being of sound mind and&#13;
disposing memory and being conscious of disposing of all my worldly estate to make and ordain&#13;
this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills at anytime made by me&#13;
Item 1st I desire that all my just debts be paid and for that purpose I charge the whole of my&#13;
estate.&#13;
Item 2nd After the payment of my debts I give to my beloved wife Elizabeth Watson to be held&#13;
by her occurring her life the whole of my estate of every kind.&#13;
Item 3rd immediately on the death of my wife Elizabeth Watson I hereby direct that all my slaves&#13;
now owned by me namely. Woodson. Permelia. Rhoda. Ann, Charlotte, Sarah, Elizabeth, and&#13;
Sam, Wesley together with the increase of the families from the date of this will be emancipated&#13;
and set free.&#13;
Item 4th after the death of my wife Elizabeth Watson I direct that all the property and estate given&#13;
her as above for life( Except the slaves herein before emancipated) be sold by my executor on&#13;
such terms as he may deem best and the proceeds applied for the benefit of my slaves as herein&#13;
emancipated and appropriated first for the purpose of removing them to a free state or to Liberia&#13;
as they may prefer if there is more than a sufficiency for their removal the surplus is to be&#13;
equally divided between them, if not enough for that purpose then I direct that they be hired out&#13;
from year to year until a sufficiency of offsets are obtained for that purpose.&#13;
Lastly&#13;
I nominate Robert N Kelso executor of this my last will and testament.&#13;
In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal this 31st day of March 1855&#13;

In the name of God Amen I Sarah Jones of the county of Bedford and state of Virginia do hereby&#13;
make this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say&#13;
Item 1st that my just debts and funeral expenses be first paid&#13;
Item 2nd I give Adeline Lee my sideboard&#13;
Item 3rd In consideration of honesty and fidelity I emancipate my negro man slave called&#13;
Grayson&#13;
Item 4th I give my daughter Nancy Clayton the following named slaves Edmond Malinda Sam&#13;
and John&#13;
Item 5th I give my three sons Henry Jones William C Jones and John Jones and to my two grand&#13;
daughters Mary Cofer Amanda Lee they both together claiming as one child’s part all the rest of&#13;
my personal estate&#13;
Item 6th I wish my old and infirm slaves Becky and Rhoda to be supported comfortably by my&#13;
executors and for that same purpose wish them to set a grant or a sum of money out of my estate&#13;
the interest of which I will be sufficient and after the death of the said slaves the principle sum&#13;
with the interest which may be remaining (if any) to be paid to my children and two&#13;
grandchildren Mary Cofer and Amanda Lee.&#13;
Item 7th After the above named legacys and all made my wishing desire is that all the rest of the&#13;
estate personal or what nature or kind soever it may be not herein before particularly disposed of&#13;
I desire may be equally divided among my three sons Henry Jones William C Jones and John&#13;
Jones my daughter Nancy Clayton and my two granddaughters Mary Cofer and Amanda Lee&#13;
they both claiming as one child And lastly I do hereby constitute an appoint my son Henry Jones&#13;
William C Jones and John Jones executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all&#13;
others or former will or testaments by me heretofor made in witness whereof I hereunto set my&#13;
hand and affixed my seal this 12th day of November 1850&#13;

At a court held for Bedford County at the courthouse on the 28th day of annuary 1856 this&#13;
writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Sarah Jones deceased was produced in&#13;
court for proof and it appearing to the court that William C. Leftwich one of the subscribing&#13;
witnesses to said will is dead his handwriting was proved by the oath of Samuel Quareles and the&#13;
said will is continued for further proof and the court doth appoint Lafayette Lee curator of the&#13;
&#13;
estate of the said Sarah Jones until the said will is admitted to record or rejected and thereupon&#13;
the said Lafayette Lee together with William Lee mark Andrews and James G Lee his securities&#13;
entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of seventy five thousand dollars conditioned&#13;
according to law. and thereafter too wit at a court held for said county at the courthouse the 29th&#13;
day of January 1856 this writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Sarah Jones&#13;
deceased was again produced in court and further proved according to law by the oath of James&#13;
S Mitchell a subscribing witness there too and the said writing was ordered to be recorded as the&#13;
last will and testament of the said Sarah Jones deceased and it is ordered that the order made on&#13;
yesterday appointing Lafayette Lee curator of the estate of they said Sarah Jones deceased be set&#13;
aside and the executors in said will named having refused to qualify and take I on themselves&#13;
the bother of the execution of said will on the motion of Lafayette Lee who made oath and&#13;
together with Garnett Lee his security entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of&#13;
seventy five dollars conditioned according to law certificate was granted him for obtaining letters&#13;
of administration with the will annexed of the estate of the said Sarah Jones deceased in due&#13;
form&#13;
