              <text>Whereas Elizabeth Woodson late of the County of Powhatan did by her last will and testament duly admitted to record in the clerk’s office of the County Court of Powhatan emancipate certain slaves to wit Joe, Mary his wife and Cathy her daughter and directed her personal representative to execute to said slaves a deed for their freedom. Now this indenture witnesseth that for and in consideration of the premises I Charles Selden duly appointed by the County Court of Powhatan as adm. or the said Woodson do by these presents emancipate the said slaves to wit Joe Mary and Cathy. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal this 8th day of March 1853.&#13;

              <text>Know all men by these presents that we Blair Burwell and Jno C Hobson of the County of Powhatan &amp; State of Virginia for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars paid by Billy Stuart to the said Blair Burwell (it being the amount heretofore advanced by the said Burwell to aid in the purchase of the said Billy Stuart from Jno B Alexander) have this day emancipated and set free and by these presents do hereby emancipate set free and forever discharge the said Billy Stuart from servitude or slavery through all time to come and we do hereby consent and agree that the said Billy Stuart shall &amp; may enjoy all the rights privileges and immunities as a free man discharged from the claim of both and each of us, and all persons claiming under us in as full and ample a manner as the laws of the land will admit.               <text>Be it remembered that I Thomas A Taylor of the County of Powhatan, for his past meritorious services, his uniformity, honest, and upright deportment, and for other equally momentous considerations, do hereby, as the laws of the State of Virginia, may in such cases direct, wish to emancipate, liberate, and effectually set free my, at present colored man and slave, named Ben, and I the said Thomas A Taylor accordingly hereby do, should the worshipful Court of Powhatan County not disapprove of the act, by these presents, most fully and effectually emancipate, liberate and set free my said man, and present slave named Ben, and I the said Thomas A Taylor do hereby further declare it to be my most earnest wish, desire and request that he my present slave named Ben may henceforward to be considered and treated as a free man, to all intents and purposes, or as nearly so as the tenor of the said state laws may be found consistently to admit; and it is the further desire and request of him, the said applicant Thomas A Taylor, that he, the said negro man named Ben, after his being emancipated, by permission, may by the said worshipful court, be permitted to reside in the said County of Powhatan, unmolested, so long as his, the said man named Ben’s conduct may be found to be uniformly orderly upright and perfectly consistent with such permission. The said man named Ben is about thirty one years old, is believed to be sound and has been hitherto as free from casual or other sickness as could reasonably be expected.               <text>To all whom these presents shall come Greeting; Know ye that I Claiborne Gray, of the County Powhatan for and in consideration to and of the sum of one dollar current money of Virginia and for the natural love and affection I bear to my children, Polly Gray about 20 years of age, Harriatt Gray about 18 years of age, and her child, Jane Gray, about 2 years of age, being now my slaves, I do hereby emancipate and set free and their future increase forever, they being the negroes set free by a decree of the high court of Appeal to when they shall respectively arrive to the age of thirty years, all which will more fully appear, reference being had to the said decree of the said highest court of Appeals on the suit of Ned a pauper against Pleasants and Logan. And I do hereby forever warrant and defend the title to freedom to the said Polly Gray, Harriatt Gray and her child Jane Gray and their future increase, forever, against myself, my heirs, and against the claim of all other persons whatsoever.               <text>This indenture made this twenty seventh day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen, between Charles Woodson of the County of Prince Edward, and State of Virginia of one part, and Caroline Matilda, a mulatto girl, late the slave of Frederick Woodson deceased, of the County of Powhatan, and said State of the other part; witnesseth that the said Frederick Woodson hath by his last will and testament (which is of record in the county court of Powhatan) directed the said Caroline Matilda to be emancipated, and that his Executors shall give to the said Caroline Matilda a deed of emancipation; and the said Charles Woodson, being one of the executors to the said last will and testament, and duly qualified according to law, doth by this indenture fully and freely emancipate the said mulatto girl Caroline Matilda, to all intents and purposes; and doth hereby publish to all whom it may concern that she is from henceforth enfranchised and placed upon a footing with other free people of color, as fully and completely as the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia will permit, and the just claims of creditors will allow.               <text>This indenture made this twenty seventh day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen between Charles Woodson of the County of Prince Edward and State of Virginia, of one part, and Betty, a negro woman, late the slave of Frederick Woodson deceased, of the County of Powhatan, and said state, of the other part; witnesseth that the said Frederick Woodson hath by his last will and testament (which is of record in the County Court of Powhatan) directed the said slave Betty to be emancipated, and that his Executors shall give to the said Betty a deed of emancipation; and the said Charles Woodson, being one of the executors to the said last will and testament, and duly qualified according to law, doth by this indenture fully and freely emancipate the said slave Betty, to all intents and purposes; and doth hereby publish to all whom it may concern, that she is from henceforth enfranchised and placed upon a footing with other free people of color as fully and completely as the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia will permit, and the just claims of creditors will allow. In witness whereof I, the said Charles Woodson executor of Frederick Woodson deceased, have hereunto placed my hand and fixed my seal this day and year first above written.&#13;

              <text>Know all men by these presents that I Frederick Woodson of the County of Powhatan, and Commonwealth of Virginia, in consideration of the trusty and faithful services of Edward Woodson, my negro man slave (born in April in the year of Christ 1785- four feet ten inches in height, strong build in statue, and slow and hoarse of speech). And also for divers good causes and considerations me, the said Frederick Woodson, hereunto moving, have given, granted, and confirmed and from the delivery of these presents, do give, grant, and confirm unto the said Edward Woodson, a negro man, full and perfect freedom and emancipation to the said Edward Woodson, a negro man against me the said Frederick Woodson, my heirs, executors and administrators and all and every other person and persons whomsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents. In testimony whereof I the said Frederick Woodson, have on this 16th day of November in the year of Christ 1813 and of our Independence the 38th subscribed my name and affixed my seal and delivered to the said Edward Woodson a negro man &amp; this deed of emancipation.&#13;
