To all whom it may Concern that whereas I was (illegible) executor or one of the Executors to the last will &amp; Testament of Thomas Watkins dce’d of the County of Halifax &amp; that through the (neglect?) of debts due from that estate to others &amp; agreeable to the directions of said last last (sic) will &amp; Testament of said dec’d Thomas Watkins, a negro man by the name of William was sold by me as Exor &amp; I became the purchaser at public auction at the price of four hundred &amp; eighty five dollars &amp; accounted with said Estate on a general settlement in my (af’d?) current &amp; whereas from the general good conduct of said William who is the slave of my father to whose will I was Executor as aforesaid &amp; said negroe man William was raised with me being nearly the age of myself &amp; the said negro man William having Contributed fully the sum to me from his honest Industry as I believe that I gave for him with the Interest having permitted him to remain in Halifax near &amp; in the neighborhood of his wife from his Industry at the Carpenters Trade has fully as aforesaid refunded to me the money I gave at auction &amp; from a further Consideration of a particular regard for him growing out of his good conduct &amp; attachment to me in my youthful days I therefor Emancipate him &amp; set said negro man William free to all intents &amp; purposes Given under my hand and seal this 15th day January 1824&#13;

              <text>In the name of God amen I James Bleakley of the county of Pittsylvania Virginia being in a low state of health but of sound mind and disposing memory for which I ought to be thankful to God and calling to mind the mortality of man do make and ordain this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills or testaments by me henceforth made. &#13;

1st I give and command my soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it and my body to be devoutly buried at the discretion of my executor. &#13;

2ndly It is my will and desire that my just debts be honestly paid out of the money arising from the sale of all my household &amp; (?) furniture. And the land I bought of Benjamin Bleakley. If any debt should remain not paid my executors hereafter named is requested at his discretion to sell property that can be best spent and until all my just debts are fully discharged. a&#13;

3rdly In a formal will hearing date the 16 day of March 1816 I did devise and give to my wife Elizabeth then living certain property therein named which property the said Eliza my wife before her death requested that the said property should be given to the person hereafter named [ILLEGIBLE]. I give to Joseph Smith brother to my wife one negro man ted and one negro woman Fann and all her increase except Richmond to him and his heirs forever. I give to Betsey Smith daughter of Joseph Smith one grey horse saddle and bridle I give unto Betsey Sanee daughter of Isaac Sanee one negro boy by the name of Richmond to her and her heirs forever my will is that after my death my negro boy Isaac for his dutiful help and faithful discharge of all command and while my wife was sick and in my calamity shall be set free and liberated from serving any person except the laws of the country and should this item be not valued I request my executor to use all legal constitutionally measures for the said negro boys liberation. &#13;
&#13;
4thly I give and bequeath to James B. Smith [???] of wills and Smith after all my just debts are fully satisfied my general expenses paid and all legal expenses for the executor of this my last will shall be satisfied all and every part of the residence of my estate both rail and the control of my executor to whom I empower at discretion to [???] the negroes on the plantation for cropping or any way the may think best to advance the gift for the benefit of the said James B Smith until her do arrive to lawful age to enjoy it that provided that the said J B Smith do live and this life before he do arise to lawful age to enjoy it in that case should it happen the gifts before mentioned is to descend equally between all the children of the said Father William Smith by his present wife but under the ongoing control as before [???] in favor of James B Smith or those of them that may live to lawful age to enjoy it &#13;

              <text>In the name of God amen, I Matthew Clay of the County of Pittsylvania &amp; State of Virginia, being of sound mind good health but knowing the uncertainty of life, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following (Viz) imprimus. It is my express desire that no inventory nor appraisements shall be taken of my estate. &#13;

2ndly I will to my two sons Joseph Clay and Matthew Clay &amp; to their heirs forever, all the lands which I own or claim lying out of the state of Virginia to be equally divided agreeable to quality and quantity between them. &#13;

3rdIy will to my daughter Amanda Ann T. Clay &amp; to her heirs forever, all the lands which I own or claim lying in the state of Virginia. &#13;

4th all the rest residue &amp; remainder of my estate both real personal, I will to be equally divided between my three children, Joseph, Matthew and Amanda Ann T. which I give unto them and their heirs forever except the legacies herein after mentioned (Viz) I will that William Penn who is now fourteen years also, shall be clothed, boarded &amp; schooled until he has acquired a good English education, then bound to learn a trade until he is twenty one years old &amp; then my Executors herein after mentioned shall pay him one thousand dollars from my estate, also give him the said William Penn one horse bridle and saddle of the value of one hundred dollars, and a good suit of clothes, and further will that my Executors cause to be carried Adelia, Eliza,and Ellen three mullato girls now about eight years old out of the state of Virgnia, into some other state to be emancipated, clothed, boarded and schooled until they are eighteen years of age &amp; then pay each of them from my estate five hundred dollars &amp; a good suit of clothes of the value of fifty dollars which I give to them &amp; their Heirs. And lastly it is my will &amp; desire that my two sons Joseph Clay &amp; Matthew Clay execute this my last will &amp; testament, signed by me on good Friday 8th April 1814 Matthew Clay of Lavallee &#13;

The within last will and testament of Matthew Clay Sr. was presented in Court and the Court being well acquainted with the hand writing of said defendant and satisfied that the said will is wholly in his handwriting, and do order that the same be recorded, and on the motion of Joseph Clay and Matthew Clay the executors therein named who made oath thereto according to law and together with Obediah P Levy, John Bennett, Joel Lanim, Westly Shelton, Tunstall Shelton, Daniel Shelton, Samuel Calland and John J Oliver their securities entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of thirty thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs certificate is granted them for obtaining a profit of the said will in due form. &#13;
