I Matilda Patterson of Campbell County do you make this my last will and testament as&#13;
followeth- it is my wish and desire that my four slaves Bob, Janney, and her two children&#13;
McCredie and Perlina Be sent to some colony, country, or state which does not hold slaves. I&#13;
desire that my executor hereafter named see that is faithfully carried into execution at the time&#13;
which may be deemed most advisable and convenient not exceeding ten years from the date of&#13;
my death. It may be necessary to hire out the said slaves for the purpose of raising funds to&#13;
defray the necessary expenses of transporting and subsisting for a short space of time after&#13;
settlement. I give to my Grand Daughter Martha Ann Patterson a bed and furniture- all the&#13;
balance of my property which I hold on my own right I wish divided equally between my sons&#13;
Alexander Patterson and D.B. Pattersons family but not to be subject to the debts or contracts of&#13;
the said D.B. Patterson any surplus hire occurring from said- slaves over and above what may be&#13;
necessary for the purpose above named I wish to be divided as above. Lastly I constitute and&#13;
appoint Alexander Patterson executor to this my last will and testament and desire that no&#13;
security be required of him. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th&#13;

and have a suit now depending for the recovery thereof in the County Court of Pittsylvania and&#13;
Whereas I believe that the said Enoch Chavers is entitled to his freedom now therefore thee&#13;
presents witness that I Bennett Arthur do emancipate and set free the said Enoch Chavers, so that&#13;
from this day forward neither&#13;
neither I or any person or persons claiming by, through or under me shall ______ any authority&#13;

but  more  especially  for  the  purpose  aforesaid  expressed  I  have  bargained  and  sold  and  do  by  these  presents&#13;
bargain,  sell  &amp;  transfer  unto  the  said  Genge  Winston  his  executors  or  administrators  all  the  aforementioned&#13;
slaves together with the future increase of the females.  Nevertheless upon this special trust &amp; confidence, that&#13;
is  to  say,  that  the  said  Genge  Winston,  his  executors  or  administrators,  shall  whenever  the  laws  of  this  state&#13;
will permit it to be done, Emancipate and set free all the aforenamed slaves, together with the future - increase  of  the  females  &amp;  if  the  said  Genge  Winston  for  the  (benefit  of  said  slaves)  shall  at  any  time  think&#13;
proper to send them to a free state, he shall with the Consent of the said slaves, be at liberty to do so.  And he&#13;
the  said  Genge  Winston  do  by  these  presents,  binds  himself  his  Executors  &amp;  administrators  to  the  full  &amp;&#13;
faithfull performance of the Trust hereby reposed in him.  In Testimony whereof we the said Pleasant Winston&#13;
&amp; Genge Winston have hereunto set our hands &amp; seals this fifth day of eleventh month, eighteen hundred &amp;&#13;

I Thomas Johnson of Bedford County to make and publish this my last will and testament the&#13;

I give every thing I possess after my just debts are paid to my wife except my slaves It is my&#13;
wish that should take her choice one of them Annually to wait upon her during her life or&#13;
widowhood. The balance of my slaves I wish my executors to hire out to humane people and for&#13;
my wife to receive the hire annually until it shall exceed the sum of Fifty dollars then for the&#13;
balance to remain in the hands of my Executors during my wife’s life or widowhood, after which&#13;
time it is my will and desire that my slaves shall be free and it is my will and desire that my&#13;
Executor should use every legal exertion for the emancipation of my slaves aforesaid and it is&#13;
further my will that the money arising from the hire of the negroes should any be divided among&#13;

I William Davis Jnr. of Campbell County Virginia from mature deliberate consideration and the&#13;
conviction of my own mind being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind&#13;
and that no law moral or divine has given me the right to or property in the persons of any of my&#13;
fellow creatures, and having desirous to fulfill the injunction of our Lord and Saviour Jesus&#13;
Christ by doing to others as I would be done by, do therefore declare that having under my care a&#13;
negroe woman named Winney about forty years with her three children namely, Peggy aged&#13;
seven years in the fifth month next ensuing, Feander aged five years in the seventh month next&#13;
ensuing, and Patty aged one month. I do hereby for myself my heirs Exor and Admins. release&#13;
unto her the said Winney, all my right interest and claim or pretentions of claim whatsoever to&#13;
her person or to any estate she may hereafter acquire. Also to her three children as above&#13;

Under the influence of humane feelings, conscious of the rectitude of the thing in itself and&#13;
authorized by the act of Assembly which declares it lawful for individuals to emancipate Slaves I&#13;
Sam. K. Jinnings did agree to purchase a man slave Toby Now being about forty years of age,&#13;
and a woman Slave Sally about thirty five years of age with an intention to emancipate them&#13;
according to the rules and regulations of the Methodist Episcopal Church. This purchase was&#13;
made some more than two years ago, and a bill of emancipation has been accordingly drawn, but&#13;
without any improper intention has not yet been committed to Record. Inasmuch therefore as the&#13;
last General Assembly have passed and act , which goes to the prevention of future liberation,&#13;
but have allowed a few months, no doubt for the purpose of completing any such deed of tender&#13;
conscience, this is to declare the intention as if it had been completely transacted prior to the&#13;
passing of the late law aforesaid VVZ, That my man Toby and woman Sally afornamed are&#13;
hereby emancipated from the chains of slavery, but are remain in my service until the first day of&#13;
January one thousand eight hundred and fifteen, and I do hereby for myself my heirs V&#13;
relinquish all right and title to the person or labour of the said Slaves Toby and Sally from and&#13;
after the first day of January 1815. Given under my hand and seal this 14th day of April eighteen&#13;
